Neo Geo returns with arcade games for the Wii

With the Wii Shop Channel nearing full completion, it’s been announced that Neo Geo console games would be shipping to the Wii’s Virtual Console very soon. Virtual Console brings back the age of the classic gaming right to your living room, without even having to swap RCA cables for each console.

The Neo Geo console returns through the Wii's Virtual Console - Image 1In an interview with IGN, SNK Playmore USA president Ben Herman wasn’t able to reveal what titles would be coming to the Wii’s Virtual Console. But he had made it clear that they’re “looking for games that haven’t been available [yet will be] more attractive to users” once they launch their game.

He continued on, saying, “If we had a chance to bring out two games for our first month I wouldn’t want it to be King of Fighters ’94 and Metal Slug 1. That wouldn’t be the plan. We have 120 different Neo Geo titlesÂ… there’s plenty to select from.” The next part we would have left quoted, but since it’s confusing to read, we’ll break it down for you.

The games won’t all be shipping out simultaneously either. SNK plans to ship out a limited number of games each month over the course of the year. They don’t want to irritate people with sporadic title release numbers, so you can expect an even distribution of titles released every month.

Also the games may be available a little over US$ 8 a pop, and as sources tell us, the titles could be had for 900 points (US$ 9). If gamers are worrying about the control scheme, Neo Geo has been thinking of converting the controls for the Wii controller, since according to Neo Geo is one reason why they are aiming for the Wii, and not the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

When asked if they would make any new content for the Wii Virtual Console gamers, Neo Geo declined to be aiming for anything new. “Right now the Neo Geo is retro, and that’s where we’ll be involved with them at this point,” Herman said. If Nintendo does move forward with online play support, the Neo Geo titles will also be reflecting SNK’s full support for online play.
