Peter Molyneux’s take on RPGs and Fable 2

Peter Molyneux, famous game designer and programmer - Image 1Well-known for his outstanding, overly enthusiastic PR skills and in-your face comments, Peter Molyneux doesn’t mince any words when talking about his newest upcoming action RPG Fable 2 for the Xbox 360. He expressed his concerns about wanting Lionhead StudiosFable 2 to be more than just “better” compared to the first game, as well as the current trend of RPGs flooding the market today.

In an email sent to SPOnG.com, he had this to say:

I find the traditional RPG either a mixture of a hugely long slog, the padding out of often poorly balanced features for tens of hours or an incredibly complex multi faceted mixing pot of meaningless and confused features where the true feeling of being heroic has been lost. What we are striving to do with Fable 2 is to give the player a true heroic path that makes you feel as though you really are playing the role of a hero or heroine through finely tuned game mechanics innovation and story and our combat system is a big part of that. But I would say that wouldnÂ’t I?

P.S. Why do I let my big mouth do this every time?

A classic Peter Molyneux line indeed. In his addendum, he answered his own question saying: “Because I’ve never made a great game… a game I consider great.” This just goes to show that you can’t put a good game designer/programmer down. And with those words, at least the gaming community can be assured that he still has a few tricks up his sleeves in the future.

With Fable 2 still slapped with a TBA release date, we can only wait and see if Mr. Molyneux can indeed put his money where his mouth is.
