PlayStation 3 preorders gone in minutes

PS3Even though the PS3 and Sony might have gone through tough tides, it was pretty obvious that they would sell in big numbers, simply because of their legacy. While the people tuned to the internet and gaming news might have heard of the flaws/complaints/greviances, a lot of people simply don’t care about it.

When it was revealed that Sony would be able to arrange for only 400,000 units in North America come D-Day, it was quite obvious that there would be madness, whose sheer magnitude could only be gauged in hindsight, a few months down the line. Besides, it wouldn’t just be buyers, but also the people who were planning on Ebay‘ing the console. We’ve seen it with the Xbox 360 that consoles on launch day can fetch you 4-digit amounts on Ebay. And with the hype behind the PS3, it would be foolish to expect otherwise.

Now incidentally, the guys over at Ars Technica were hunting around EB Games and Gamestop trying to pre-order a few of them PS3s. Apparently, every store will be getting between five to twenty come launch day. Remembering the launch of the Xbox 360, we can only shudder at the thought of what the PS3’s launch might be like. Secondly, we’d safely hazard a guess that over 75% of the buyers were simply going to sell them on Ebay and make a fat buck.

Here’s a few words form the guys over at Ars Technica:

“Our New York correspondent reported a swarm at the local GameStop. He ended up in fifth place, behind four college students and ahead of a guy who was going to be “late to work.” His store had a total allocation of 13 units, according to one of the clerks there, and they were gone within an hour of the store opening for business.”

“Reports from Chicago-area outlets were similar: low allocations and quick sellouts. The GameStop in Skokie had five units available, and they were gone within five minutes. An EB Games on the northwest side of Chicago went through its allocation of 16 PS3s in 20 minutes according to a clerk who also told Ars that two of those 16 went to store employees.”

“”‘This is the easy bit, but I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like to tell customers that they won’t be getting a system for the next few months,’ one customer told me as I walked out, and I had to agree,” said Ben.”

Now it’s sad that many of these guys are probably going to sell them on Ebay. What’s worse is that they’ll probably be lapped up by eager consumers with a thousand plus bucks to spare. Will I buy a PS3? Probably. Will I get a chance to buy it on launch day? I’m not even thinking about it. Stay tuned for the latest updates as we count down to the PS3’s launch.
