SCEA on NPD’s figures for March 07: Sony fared better than illustrated

Sony disagrees with NPD figures for March 07 - Image 1A couple of days ago, consumer and retailer information provider National Purchase Diary (NPD) finally released hardware sales figures for video game consoles. The report’s numbers show that Nintendo is leading the pack with Wii and DS while Sony‘s PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PlayStation Portable (PSP) are lagging behind.

Sony, on the other hand, begs to differ.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), focus should be given on sales increase percentage rather than actual units sold. If we are to follow this observation, then Sony would be the top company in March as it sales percentage rose by 2% from February. Both Microsoft and Nintendo are on the decline, with 12% and 22% drop for the 360 and Wii respectively.

SCEA also highlighted NPD’s data on retail dollars generated year-over-year for the PlayStation brand in North America. Ending March 2007, total sales were around US$ 447 million, increasing 24% from last year. When it comes to the PSP and PS2, Sony reiterated:

PSP also witnessed gains in March, up 2% over February with sales of 179,796 units. The price of the PSP Core system was dropped from $199 to $169 in early April, which has received very positive retailer and consumer response. PS2 continued to be a strong performer in March, with unit sales of 279,866.

Lastly, Sony attributed improved PS2 software sales because of God of War II as well as a 13% increase in PSP sales.
