Sony zaps PlayStation 3’s surge protector warranty woes

Sony zaps PlayStation 3 surge protector warranty woes - Image 1Can plugging your Sony PlayStation 3 into a surge protector void its warranty? As strange as this speculation sounds, it appears to be the case for Danjak over at the official US PlayStation forums. According to Danjak, the problem began when he tried to call Sony’s customer service hotline to have his recently bricked PS3 repaired.

Danjak’s worry gave way to shock (no pun intended) when he was told by the service rep that plugging his console into a surge protector – instead of directly into the wall socket – voided its warranty. This meant that he would have to shell out US$ 150 in repair bills.

Now, before you start panicking over there, we’ll be getting to the good news. Sony was recently contacted by the Wired blog regarding this matter, and the company clarified that plugging your PS3 into a surge protector does not void your warranty. Sony further noted that they’ll be contacting the complainant (we assume they mean Danjak) to clarify matters further.

As you guys may recall, a similar problem was reported a few months back for Microsoft’s Xbox 360. According to this report, MS’ tech hotline stated during an inquiry that a good part of their bricking reports had a strong correlation with owners attaching their unit to a surge protector. The service representative further stated that keeping the 360 plugged into a protector may have caused fluctuations that would damage the unit.
