StrmnNrmn on audio support for Daedalus R9

A recent update found in PSP developer StrmnNrmn‘s blog reveals a bit more about audio support for Daedalus, and what to expect from Daedalus R9 when it comes to audio and performance.

He notes that he’s been putting off implementing audio support for the emulator because he didn’t think that the emulator was running fast enough. Moreover, he says that he knew that writing an audio list processor from scratch is a time consuming error prone process.

He says that in the end he decided to see if he could find the source for a PC audio plugin and then adapt it for use with Daedalus. He was able to discover that Azimer made the source for v0.55 of his audio plugin available, and in the end implementing it in Daedalus went incredibly well. He says that Azimer’s source was very self-contained and it was relatively easy to get working.

So how does the audio support affect the emulator’s performance? StrmnNrmn says that he has yet to measure the effects empirically but it guesstimates that it slows things down by about 10-20%. Given that R9 should be running about 40 to 100 percent faster than R8, he says that you should be able to run R9 with audio support and still see an increase in speed.

If you want more detail (especially the technical aspects) on StrmnNrmn’s overview on audio support for Daedalus, our “read” link below should lead to his blog post.
