A quick look at the sound of Haze

The sound of Haze (image from IGN) - Image 1The official Haze blog has been updated with a post detailing the audio work done for the game. Those who take a deep interest in the audio side of gaming should note that for Haze, Free Radical enlisted the expertise of veteran sound guy Graeme Norgate.

Norgate, who according to the blog post is also known as “Beefburger”, has worked on a whole lot of titles ranging from GoldenEye to TimeSplitters to Second Sight. With Mantel’s help, Free Radical has enhanced the differences that players feel when experiencing the game as a Mantel soldier as opposed to playing through it as a Promise Hand rebel.

One of the most interesting things in the blog post is that characters who use Nectar will sound different from characters who are clean and sober. Even the dosage of Nectar that a character is under plays a role in determining how different that character sounds from a normal guy.

Since the developers couldn’t predict just when a player character will be under the influence of Nectar, all of the audio effects used are done by the Sony PlayStation 3 hardware itself. “It’s not something we’ve done to the sound, it’s something that the console can do to the sound whenever it’s necessary – which is a first for us. The previous gen simply didn’t have the power to do this.”
