Age of Conan: Derketo’s high priest

templeOne of the many things that make an MMO title great is the story behind it. After all, when you think about it, everything we know now first began as a story. Developer Funcom definitely knows this for a fact and that is why they’ve been working hard to build the lore of their latest project – Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

Yesterday we dealt with the story of Derketo. Symbolized by a fish, Derketo is actually a goddess of fertility and lust worshipped across the southern kingdoms. Now, it goes without saying that in this modern time, every god has at least one oracle – that high figure that beckons to the deity’s every call and inquiry. With the stage set, we now talk about the Oracle of Derketo.

This figure, who is a man, is quite an ambiguity to the common folk of Khopshef Province. He dwells in an ancient temple that sits in the shadow of the great pyramid south of the village of Bubshur. Interestingly, people who have seen him renounced their former lives and joined his cult. The Oracle of Derketo is such an irresistible being, with an allure that can only be described as mysterious, with a skin so golden, and his beauty – exotic and androgynous.

The cult furthermore, is nothing short of being steadfast in serving their leader. They chose to live in tents around the temple, continuously cleaning and decorating the worn stone walls with colorful banners and scraps of cloth to restore some of its former glory. They know that The Oracle of Derketo is not loved by all and so they are always on their guard.

While the cult might have found peace in the presence of the priest, the people left in the villages sees this as one great puzzle. Because you see, not a single person who have joined cult never made it back. Not far from the temple, on a cliff overlooking the brooding pyramid, a group of Black Ring emissaries have arrived from the southeast. They’re watching the cult from a far. Observing. Waiting.

Now little do they know, that they are being watched as well…
