Australian Xbox 360 Breaks Sales Records

Australians have had to wait an absolute age to get their hands on an Xbox 360 console (eager importers aside). The US and European launch of the machine occurred before Christmas (November / December 2005), but Aussies have only just seen the console launch there last week. It seems the wait didn’t put off those desperate to own the machine. Analysts are reporting  a record week one sales for the Xbox 360.

The report estimates aropund 30,421 Xbox 360s were sold between Thursday 23 March (launch day) through to Sunday 26 March. This means the Xbox 360 has had better first week launch sales than the Gamecube (9,190), original Xbox (6,672), PS2 (3,366) and the PSP (27,055). Over 350 games outlets opened at midnight for the launch, including one store in Sydney that saw thousands line the streets. Sales of software for the launch were estimated at 2.6 games per console.
