Averatec Creates a Splash With Its Decidedly Different UMPC

Averatec UMPCNotebook manufacturer Averatec’s announced that it’s to jump on the UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) bandwagon. Its new device, though, is going to be very different from the competition. While all the other UMPCs announced so far have 7-inch screens, Averatec’s is to come with a 5-inch screen, making it more portable than its competitors. In addition it’s also to be equipped with a slide-out keyboard – another first for UMPCs.

Averatec’s equipped their little hybrid device with 802.11g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet and a modem, and it’ll also come with a 2-megapixel camera, two USB 2.0 slots and an SD/MMC card slot.

Before you run out to buy this one, though, there are two things to consider. Firstly, this little device isn’t technically a UMPC, as it won’t run the Windows version that UMPCs run on (it’ll instead run Windows XP Tablet Edition). Secondly, it won’t be out until Christmas, so you’ll have all the time you need to think about whether or not you want to take the plunge.
