Best Buy gives Sony PlayStation 3 price cut the thumbs up

While some companies don’t seem all too happy about Sony‘s recently announced price cuts for the PlayStation 3, that doesn’t appear to be the case with retailers. This was the message being put across by Best Buy‘s Brian Lucas during an interview. Lucas believes that the price cut will help build up interest in the console, or more specifically, its function as a Blu-Ray player.

Best Buy's logo - Image 1We think the price move is great and will help drive increased interest, particularly in light of the dual functionality as a Blu-Ray player. It becomes a viable, cost effective option for people interested in next generation DVD.

On an off-topic note, Lucas is also letting the guys know that Best Buy expects to have their Wii console shortage problem fixed by the second half of this year.

As was reported earlier, Sony’s decision to chop the PS3’s price down to US$ 499 was met with mixed reactions. Microsoft was reportedly making preparations to roll out “Project Falcon” as their counter-punch to the move.

Game developer/publisher Konami‘s Kazumi Kitaue further commented that the price cut didn’t impress him, and that the company may have to take steps to help shoulder the development costs for Metal Gear Solid 4. The US$ 100 price cut took effect today (July 10), and with the PS3 console already achieving record sales on Amazon.
