Blizzard answers StarEdit questions, reveals more open StarCraft 2 editor

Blizzard Entertainment - Image 1Battle.NET community manager Karune has recently served another plate of user-derived questions, answered by Blizzard‘s StarCraft II Senior Software Engineer, Brett Wood. But this time around, Karune has tendered this new serving of questions for StarCraft II‘s map maker (or editor or ScumEdit for the SC-inclined) for those budding custom map makers and multiplayer buffs responsible for addicting mods, such as Defense of the Ancients for Warcraft III.

First and foremost, the new StarEdit will come with Warcraft III‘s WarEdit standards as minimum, and it will also boast a more flexible, open system for developing custom maps or campaigns. We say this, because Brett Wood, the “Superfly Father of ScumEdit Programmer by Day Ninja by Night” said that unlike WarEdit’s AI trigger availability, the new Starcraft II editor will come with more triggers. Maps will support trigger limits by the thousands, too.

“We’ve been making a point of ensuring that all script functionality is also exposed in the Trigger Editor UI,” he added. He also assured that all units defined in the game’s data files will be usable inside the editor. Creating maps with those unused units will no longer be inhibited. Furthermore, Brett Wood also mentioned that Starcraft II will come with a healthier unit limit (though it was once said to remain at 200), compared to that of Warcraft III.

“The exact value hasn’t been nailed down yet and will depend on optimizations near the end of the project,” said Wood. More StarCraft II news as they rush in.
