Cool vs. Hawt: New Wii and PS3 TV ads
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and they also say that when marketing your product, you should focus on its strengths and advantages and why people should shell out their money for the said product. Well, in the case of Nintendo and Sony, two videos which have been floating around on YouTube would probably illustrate those marketing strategies best.
We have two companies with different mottos, different audiences, and different personalities, and now that one thinks about it, perhaps it may also be possible that the only similarity that they will ever bear would be the fact that they are both members of the video games industry. These two ads just simply underline just how different these two are, just as white is separated from black.
*looks at the two consoles* Literally.
Now, while watching these two ads, one thing jumped at us the most, and that would be the opening lines for each video. The ad for the Wii begins with “Wii would like to play” in that Japanese man’s Japanese accent, while the ad for the PS3 begins with “This is a pixel” in the very mature, and polished voice of the narrator.
The Wii ad shows two Japanese Wii agents knock on people’s doors to show them how to party, and perhaps even give a subtle message about camaraderie and racial harmony. Meanwhile, the PS3 ad shows a mysterious black rose which opens to reveal the eye of Sauron a beast, and the script goes on to revel on the glories of HDTV, Blu-ray, and graphics-to-die-for.
Now, what was I saying about different personalities and different audiences?
In any case, we would have posted both videos here, but unfortunately, the Wii ad can’t be embedded. We also thought that some may find it unfair if we only put up the PS3 ad, so here’s some screenshots from both ads instead. Then you can view the Wii video here and the PS3 video over here, and see them for yourselves.
(Thanks to badam for pointing out these ads to us!)
