Core 2 Duo Support Likely to Require BIOS Update

chart

The above chart details the specifications of each family and generation of processors, along with their bus speed, cache type and size, thermal design, name and manufacturing process used.

Contrary to recent scuttlebutt surrounding the issue of whether or not Yonah based laptops will need BIOS updates in order to run the upcoming Memrom processors, Laptop Logic is reporting that a  BIOS update will be required in most cases. As most people have not even made the switch to Core Duo yet, the conflagration over this issue will mean little to many laptop owners. However, it is interesting to see how laptop manufacturers collude with processor manufacturers to make things confusing and difficult for consumers.

There are some Calistoga based machines that do support memrom processors without an update, but these machines seem to be the exception and not the rule. Machines that support Memrom without a BIOS update include: Fujistu’s N series and the Apple Mac Mini. The Asus S96J laptop, and many others, don’t support the Memrom processor according to tests done by Laptop logic, but that company is reportedly working on a solution.

Hopefully other manufacturers will realize that consumers should be able to upgrade their machines instead of being forced to purchase a new machine every few months in order to keep up with the blistering pace of technological advances.
