For those of us currently enjoying one of this generation’s finest FPS experiences, Crytek‘s Crysis for the PC, then here’s an update from the development team themselves about the recent patch (that is, patch 1.2) and what should we all be waiting for in the next one. It’s a bit of a read, but let’s cover the most important ones first, shall we?

First off, Cheat Protection. Yes, we know that there are a lot of players who would like nothing more than have an easier time getting those kills, but when it gets to a point that it spoils competitive gameplay, then there isn’t much point to playing, is there?

Thankfully, the developers are now working on a cheat protection system that when once implemented, will not only offer the best in security, but will also allow the user to choose just how stringent it will be. It will have three levels of protection, with the third level being the highest and recommended for clan matches. The lower two are recommended for public and casual matches. This system, enabled with the console variable “sv_cheatprotection”, can also be set individually to protect modifications.

What does this mean for the average FPS player, then? Well, for one thing, it enables you to have a choice between having a pure, unadulterated match of Crysis, or one that’s a bit more free-spirited – in terms of what you’re willing to let other players be able to do (and yourself, as well). Sure, we all love the level playing field that puts our skills to the test, but there are always times where we just want to blow stuff up and have a blast doing it. Thankfully, the guys behind the world’s prettiest FPS game gives us the freedom to choose.
