EA’s Intat: More PS3s for Euro launch, please

Jens-Uwe IntatThat’s what EA’s vice president and general manager of Europe Jens-Uwe Intat implied when he talked with GamesIndustry.biz about the PS3 launch. Admittedly, he said, there was “a fairly small amount of machines” during the North American and Japan launches, and they all sold out. And Sony sees this as a success.

But Intat’s hoping that come the next-gen console’s spring release in Europe, there will be lots more units available. Sure, Sony thinks that “it’s better this way around than having new hardware sitting on shelves”, but Electronic Arts “would obviously like to see more units”.

It comes as no surprise that EA and other publishers have been looking askance at the launch estimations of manufacturers. They already expect that “the amount of units on the run-up to launch” always “deteriorates”.

But this doesn’t mean that EA is giving up on the PS3. Despite the problems Sony went though with the console’s manufacturing, “the publisher is still confident the PlayStation 3 is on track to hit European retailers this coming March”.

So there, Sony; bring out more units compared to the Japan and North America launches and you won’t need to worry about sales in Europe. And keep the ads and the hype going.
