EEDAR: Retail game releases to decline further in the coming years

videogame_shelvesIf you are interested to know, 2009 saw 1,099 video games released officially to US retailers. That’s seven games short of the 1,092 video games released back in 2008. While that number isn’t all too staggering, Jesse Divinich of EEDAR reckons this is but a taste of things to come.

The Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst is of the opinion that as the years progress, the number of games released to retail will decline. Among the factors of this foreseen phenomenon would be shelf space and consumer spending. Of course, a more obvious factor would be the arrival of digital distribution. He also cited services like OnLive, assuming that it would actually work.
