With the unveiling of the iPhone 3GS at the WWDC, here come the candid sales pitches. The iPhone has been steadily gaining a foothold in the gaming scene, and the attention now turns to its graphics capability. The iPhone 3GS boasts OpenGL 2.0 support, which Fishlabs CEO Michael Schade believes to be the new iPhone’s trump card over the PSP.
“The OpenGL 2.0 support will push the iPhone beyond PSP,” he said, although he did note that it’ll be up to the software developers to consolidate the feature. “As graphic assets need to be designed from scratch to benefit from 2.0 shaders it will be very hard to monetize the extra effort in the early days,” he added. “It’s definitiely not worth it for US$ 0.99 apps.” Well if you’re talking about surpassing the PSP, the 99-cent apps are out of the question.
“It makes more sense now to have a setting for extra high graphics to run on iPod touch 2 and iPhone 3GS, even if that means more dev efforts and testing,” he said. “It creates some fragmentation but we can still support all devices with just one SKU that detects automatically what device it’s running on, and switches to the best graphics automatically.”
Schade didn’t mention if Fishlabs has a non-99-cent game in the works to showcase the graphical potential that he talked about, but we might get more info once Apple releases the iPhone 3GS in the US on June 18th.
