GC 2006: Mario Strikers Charged Details
Nintendo’s Press Release on Mario Strikers Charged, the tentative name for the sequel to Super Mario Strikers (known as Mario Smash Football in Europe), reveals some useful information. We might be reading too closely into these statements but it seems more than just Mario characters might be joining in on the fun.
Characters: Mario is joined by other famous Nintendo characters who take on the role of captain. Players then select a host of popular teammates to make up the rest of the team.
Famous Nintendo characters? We don’t know if we could get used to seeing Samus or Link on the soccer field. Mario has been milked for these games, but I’d rather see Zelda and Metroid stay the way they are!
There will be twelve captains to choose from and each captain has eight sidekicks, from which he/she can choose three to join in battle. Like any Mario sports title, the game will be filled with special abilities!
Super abilities/power ups/moves/features: Each captain has their own set of skills, super abilities as well as the ability to perform special shots called Mega Strikes, where the iron ball splits up to five balls and flies at the goal. The defending player must use the Wii Remote to target and aim at and shoot these balls out of the air before they concede a goal. In this game players can also charge energy to the metal ball, making it more likely to find its target when fired at goal.
The game will make significant use of the WiiMote and Nunchuck’s special controls, but that’s not the only thing that will be different from the GameCube game! Mario Strikers Charged will offer multiplayer through the Nintendo WiFi Connection! “[A]llowing players to take part in tournaments with people from all around the world.” Tournaments? Interesting! This makes Mario Strikers Charged the first Mario sports title to embrace online play!
