Getting a Death Knight in WoW

How to get your very own Death Knight in WoW - Image 1Ever since Blizzard announced the Death Knight hero class in The Wrath of the Lich King expansion for World of Warcraft, there has been a lot of talk on how to get access to this new class. So far, the only thing that has been confirmed is that every class will be getting a chance to unlock this character but not in the way most people would assume.

First and foremost, players will NOT be transforming their characters into a Death Knight. In addition to this, the Death Knight will not be an extension of your character as some have been led to believe. Blizzard Poster/ ommunity Manager Nethaera clarified this in her post in the forums:

Every class as an availability is the current thinking, but is not necessarily the final thinking on this. We shall see what happens. Also, you will not be transforming one class into it, you will be able to unlock the class for play. We felt that it was important for players to not feel as if they had to give up a long term character for the chance to play the new heroic class.

There is a perception that what you will be doing is choosing a specialty class that would be an extension of your current class, but that’s not how we’re doing it. We felt that if we did that for all of the classes, we’d be adding far too many classes at once and making continuing efforts toward class balance very difficult.

Judging from what Nethaera said, it looks like once you finish the level 70 quest chain, you’ll be able to create a Death Knight in the character create screen. If this were the case, how powerful will the Death Knight be compared to Paladins and Warriors in tanking considering the investment players have to put in to unlock it?
