HD DVD players to hit the shelves next week – quietly….

Video Business online reports that the first HD DVD players will be shipped as early as next week. HD DVD supporter Toshiba are expected to ship between 10,000 and 15,000 players by next week, several thousand of which will be used for display purposes at retailers. 5 HD DVD movies from Warner Home Video and Universal studios are also expected to launch on Tuesday, 18th April.

Universal has yet to announce or confirm it, but the studio is expected to release  the sci-fi hit Serenity on April 18, the same day Warner debuts its first three HD DVD titles—Million Dollar Baby, The Last Samurai and The Phantom of the Opera. This seems to be a very low key launch for HD DVD. If your a HD DVD supporter, and you want a HD DVD player from release, i’d suggest you get down to your local Best Buy or similar, and get them to keep you one behind, stocks are really limited.

It appears HD DVD has beaten Blu Ray to the shelves a lot earlier than was predicted. Remind you of the PS3 and XBOX 360 battle?
