Hollywood execs: Media downloads won’t take over just yet

Blu-ray - Image 1 Will digital downloads via Xbox Live, PSN, and iTunes soon take over the business of delivering consumers TV shows and hit movies? Not if you ask top Hollywood execs. In a recent gathering of the industry’s movers and shakers, the general notion was that physical media would remain on top in the few years ahead. Read the details in the full article up next.

Hollywood - Image 1In the recent Content Delivery and Storage Association conference held jointly by top Hollywood studios, four major studio officials admitted that the industry and the market aren’t quite ready to have digital content distributed mainly via download services.

It was also projected that it will take several years for the technology to seriously rival Blu-ray discs and standard definition DVDs.

“I donÂ’t think we have to be worried about the replacement of physical media for some time,” said Benn Carr, Disney‘s vice president of new technology. “Downloading sales are not going to ‘hockey-stick’ soon. Every time I access a site and download, itÂ’s not necessarily seamless.”

TV shows and hit movies will soon be available or are already live in services powered by Apple, Microsoft, TiVo and NetFlix. However, this group is seen by many as a pioneering act which will capture a relatively small market at this time.

The state of today’s broadband technology, according to Hollywood studio officials, will be hard-pressed to deliver high-speed results  for those who want on-demand video. Hope, however, is right around the corner as plans to revolutionize internet service providers are already underway in Japan, the U.S., and Europe.
