How Wii Play: the minigame extravaganza

Duck Hunt Rules!

When I was a kid, I used to be obsessed with killing ducks. With my trusty light gun and my faithful dog “Cat,” we’d go and take out entire families of the tasty critters. Of course, we couldn’t eat them, since they were on my NES (so was Cat). What most people will love about Wii Play will probably be seeing some games they’d never expect to get remakes as part of the collection, along with some notable additions.

There are nine games in Wii Play which use the controller in some interesting ways, from shooting to steering, and even mimicking motions. As mentioned above, there is the new and improved Duck Hunt, called Shooting Range as part of the point-and-click types of games. Another game of this type is a Wii version of Where’s Waldo, known as Find Mii, where you have to find and then click on the correct character using the Wiimote.

If you’d like to use the Wiimote to steer things instead, there are the games Tanks and Charge! for gamers. The description for Tanks states that you’re going to be able to control a tank and target the cannon for firing. While it doesn’t explain if you really get to move the tank around, you can be sure that Charge! does, as you grab a bull by the horns and steer it into scarecrows using the Wiimote (when turned sideways).

What else do you get to do? Well, you can user your Wiimote to rotate Mii characters like Tetris blocks in Pose Mii, use it as a ping-pong racket or shield in Table Tennis and Laser Hockey, and even make your Wiimote act like a fishing rod in the aptly named Fishing. Better still for all those pool sharks out there is the opportunity to play Billiards using the tilted Wiimote as the physical equivalent of your cue. It may be a minigame extravaganza, but there’s definitely something for every type of gamer in this one. Let’s just hope they make an American release soon, so I can get myself some ducks!
