id: No “monster closets” in Rage
“Monster closets” are spawn points that only activate when certain trigger points are reached in a game. This system, while quite surprising and scary the first time but almost always becomes repetitive and very easy to anticipate in subsequent playthroughs, was one of the major criticisms laid against Doom 3. For the upcoming Rage, id Software is making a point of avoiding the monster closet system altogether.

For the upcoming Rage, id Software is making a point of avoiding the monster closet system altogether. Matt Hooper, Rage‘s lead designer, recently told 1Up that you won’t see a single monster closet in the game at all:
[In Rage] when you’re going to the RC-Bomb base [from the demo] to deal with the Shrouded clan they’re doing whatever they’re supposed to be doing. If they’re supposed to be defending against you coming there, they’ll be doing that. If they’re just tinkering or having a conversation they’ll do that. You will never see [a monster closet.]
Rage is out next year on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
