Improved particle effects mod announced for Crysis, Crytek looking for skilled modders

CryMod updates - Image 1Don’t get us wrong: these are two totally related things, though Crytek isn’t behind both of them. Somewhere among the awesome texture mods proposed is news that a modder will be improving the particle effects in Crysis via modifications. And in addition to that, we also heard that Crytek might be looking for great modders to use in upcoming Crysis Warhead.

While Crysis Warhead is getting refitted for active duty come September, the technically savvy folks at the CryMod community haven’t ended brainstorming spree to improve the first Crysis. User HavokSavage, for instance, has proposed that Crysis could render better particle effects by way of modifications in physics and textures.

And what the modder‘s got parked in camp is a slew of great ideas: what if explosions on the ground kicked up more soil? What if successive impacts on rocky formations caused pieces of them to spew out and fall to the ground? What if blood could spew out more realistically from unfortunate victims?

Enticing as these sound, they aren’t all that what HavokSavage has planned:

  • Fires can start if an explosion is near foliage or buildings, not dynamic at the moment.
  • Improved wood pieces and splinters, with additional 3d models.
  • Much longer lasting smoke.
  • Small landslides when cliffs are shot.
  • Soil and dirt is kicked up from explosions.
  • Additional dust on tree break.
  • Additional physicalized blood particles

Ambitious stuff. Funny how this development fits right in with something that PC Games Hardware X (PCGHX) let slip: Crytek is apparently closely eyeing the modding community for notable mods and their skilled authors, in an effort to take in those great ideas and probably use them on Crysis Warhead.

What’s sweeter is that they also are recruiting great modders for help with some official stuff. We might get more on that as soon as the interview’s published, so stay tuned for more.

Oh, we’ve linked the mod thread at the source below so you can get more snapshots of the new effects.
