Kazuo Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. flaunts the Blu-ray format and the PS3 console's capacity - Image 1Nobody can deny the big steps next gen consoles have given gamers in terms of the quality of games coming out right now. Kazuo Hirai affirms this fact as he talks about Sony‘s Blu-ray format and its place in the entertainment industry today.

The President and Group Chief Operating Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. said that the Blu-ray format was designed to give game developers the absolute biggest canvas on which to create their games on. Considering the 50GB capacity of the Blu-ray disc, this certainly gives developers the space to fit a high definition game all in one disc instead of using multiple DVDs.

Hirai wasn’t stingy when it came to praising the PS3’s capabilities against its rival consoles such as the Xbox 360. He cited that the high definition games like Resistance: Fall of Man, with its 16 GB size, just wouldn’t have been possible without multiple discs if it weren’t for the Blu-ray disc neatly wrapping it all up into one package.

He also mentions the flexibility the PS3 has with the amount of downloadable content the console gives the consumer. Be it games or music or movies, the PS3 provides an absolute entertainment package which can be found in the Sony family of companies.

As for the long-term viability of the Blu-ray disc and the online capabilities of the PS3, Hirai had this to say:

The disc is not dead. Far from it. For many years to come there will be a place at the table for disc-based content in the world of entertainment. It is about offering consumers options. Some may like the convenience of downloading a game at home, while others will always want the experience of going to the store and talking to the clerks and other consumers about the games they are interested in. Whichever way a consumer wants to receive their content, we want to have a solution.
