Interview with EA’s VP Jeff Brown

Jeff BrownWe earlier featured Electronic Arts VP Jeff Brown and his bold prediction that the Wii will emerge as the winner of the next-gen console wars. To give you a recap, he mentioned that because of the Wii’s unique factor, it will be the second console that people will buy after a Xbox 360 or a PS3, the Wii may be the second buy but overall, they’ll emerge as the winner in sales. He has a point there, and you readers didn’t disappoint us with your comments. But now, he is back with more juicy tidbits not only for the Wii but also for the Xbox 360 and for the PS3.

He had already expressed his thought about Wii, now when he was asked about the PS3’s price point, he gamely mentioned that Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Corporation are very good at marketing consumer electronics, although he wished that it has a cheaper price tag he understands the fact that Sony “have a business that they have to maintain, that’s the price point they came to.”

The price may be high but it could be compensated by the fact that Sony is good at selling their electronic products. He refused to give a specific answer about the potential loss for Sony because of the stiff price tag. When asked whether the criticisms thrown at Sony is fair, he says that it isn’t.

Jeff also answered questions with regards to the fact that EA has not been coming up with that much original IP coming out of EA and instead, sticks to updating familiar franchises. He answered this one with a comparison between the movie industry and the gaming industry wherein “in the motion picture business, usually the sequels stink. In the videogame business, sequels – certainly by the time you start getting into three and four – are in fact pretty good, or they wouldn’t be sequels.”

Lastly, he was asked about EA’s dominant position as the biggest third-party publisher in the business. He has nothing but utter respect and hope for their contemporaries. He says that “I hope that there are competitors. I hope that Take-Two survives the problems that they’ve got. I hope that there’s another GTA out there, that someone comes out with these fantastic games that makes everybody feel they’ve got to buy a 360 or a PS3, because everybody’s playing that game.” In the end, all we need is respect, that’s nice to hear.
