Japanese porn industry goes with Blu-ray

Blu-ray - Image 1While HD-DVD may be the format of choice for most members of the U.S. porn industry, recent events have shown that support for the Blu-ray format is starting to grow. In Japan, meanwhile, adult film makers have already made a decisive choice to go with Blu-ray.

According to PC World, movie makers revealed during the Adult Treasure Expo 2007 in Chiba, Japan, that Sony has started offering more technical support to Japan’s adult film industry. Right now, there are ten Japanese adult movies on Blu-ray compared to only one on HD-DVD.

Major reasons for the decision seems to be both price and the Blu-ray-equipped Sony PlayStation 3. HD-DVD movies cost more than Blu-ray movies in Japan, partly due to HD-DVD movies being bundled with DVD versions as well. Sony’s strong presence in the Japanese gaming industry also seems to have played a major role.

Despite this, Sony has stated that its policy of not allowing Sony DADC Global, the company’s disc replicating subsidiary, to copy adult films has not changed. A Sony spokeswoman, however, said that the company will offer technical support to any film makers no matter what industry.
