Japanese Wiimotes being sold in California

Can somebody please inform us if there’s a Wiimote shortage currently going on? Because the last time we looked, there’s a fairly good number of them lying around most of the major retail stores. And we’d like to say that there’s plenty for everybody. If that’s the case, then what is up with this?

I found a JDM wiimote in the Fry’s Electronics in San Jose yesterday and snapped some pics of it. Any idea if they’re compatible with the U.S. Wii? Are there any reports of other JDM wii accessories hitting the U.S. shores?

Logically speaking, these peripherals intended for the Japanese domestic market (JDM) should work with the U.S. model of the console lest Fry’s want to get in trouble for selling them. But the main question here is that, why are they even selling these here?
