Kaz Hirai squashes US price drop rumours for PS3
Most people have likely heard by now that Sony has dropped the price of the 20 GB PlayStation 3 in Japan. Instead of 60,000 yen (approximately 515 US dollars) it is now “only” 49,980 yen (approximately 430 US dollars). Of course, this led to rumours that Sony would be dropping the price of the console in all parts of the world. Sadly, that will not be the case.
“In the US, we’re comfortable with the pricing that we announced at E3: $499 for the 20 gigabyte version and $599 for the 60-gigabyte version. There are no plans right now to adjust the pricing for the US market” says Kaz Hirai, Sony Computer President.
Well, it’s not like a price drop will help at this point. With only 400,000 units for North America and 100,000 for Japan at launch, the console is sure to sell out. The PS2, GCN, 360, and DS have all shown us that people are willing to pay even twice retail price for a system for Christmas.
