Killzone 2: A closer look at the ISA Cruiser

Killzone 2 - Image 1Fresh from the Killzone Command Center, it’s the ISA Cruiser for Killzone 2. Guerilla Games artists let us in on the massive vertical warship and the many steps they took to make the ISA Cruiser what it is today. A lot of thought went into this war machine, too bad they couldn’t put as much thought on naming the game, but that’s just me. It’s a good thing that the graphics and gameplay compensate for that. Fresh from the Killzone Command Center, it’s the ISA Cruiser for Killzone 2. Guerrilla Games artists let us in on the massive vertical warship and the many steps they took to make the ISA Cruiser what it is today. A lot of thought went into this war machine, too bad they couldn’t put as much thought on naming the game, but that’s just me. It’s a good thing that the graphics and gameplay compensate for that.

“The design brief called for an ISA Cruiser that could hold its own against the Helghast ships seen during the intro sequence of Killzone 1,” artist Miguel Martinez said. “Much like its Helghast counterpart, the starting point for the design was a weapon-like shape. After a while we wondered, ‘What if the ISA Cruiser really was an enormous weapon, pointed at the planet surface?Â’ The vertical orientation came naturally after that.”

These mammoth warships actually remind me of a Star Destroyer from Star Wars, especially the one that fell vertically and “stabbed” the Death Star.

One of the challenges they had with the ISA Cruiser was its sheer size, which made it a bit tricky to scale. “The trick was to determine which areas of the exterior would actually be visible up close during the game. Occasionally the player can see parts of it clearly – from the launch bay where Alpha Team boards the Intruder, for instance. I kept the map resolutions as high as possible in those areas,” said Robert Adcock, another artist for Killzone 2.

As a result, we have this huge sword-like warship pointing to the Earth. With the kind of graphics that Killzone 2 offers (plus nifty tricks that the artists pulled off), plus the fact that it runs on the most powerful console out there, it’s a sight to behold.
