LittleBigPlanet’s online Create not available at launch
Looks like you’re going to be all by your lonesome when LittleBigPlanet first hits shelves. Media Molecule has clarified that, at the get-go, you won’t be able to create your own levels with your friends online. The multiplayer online aspect of the Create mode will be incorporated only after the game hits shelves, when the first major update for the game gets released. What does this mean for you? More time to familiarize yourself with all those tools, of course!
LittleBigPlanet‘s theme of “Play. Create. Share.” (which, by the way, are three names of the gold Trophies to be unlocked) will be a bit stilted at first. Over at the PlayStation boards, Media Molecule developer Sam_Protagonist clarifies that the online multiplayer Create mode will not be accessible right from the start.
The four-player online Create mode – the one in which you and your buddies can design levels online – will only be incorporated within the game during the first major update for the game. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to create your own levels offline, meaning, all four of you sharing one PS3 unit. The developer further continues:
The next question will undoubtedly be “when is the first update due” and right now there is no specific time set at the moment, however with the game having gone gold, the team at Media Molecule are already hard at work on content for the game after its release, with online multiplayer creating top of the list.
Which isn’t all that bad, I suppose. You’ll have enough things to busy yourself with in LittleBigPlanet anyways, with or without the multiplayer online Create mode: there’s a bunch of Trophies to collect, not to mention the whole tutorial to go through.
Just think of it this way: by the time the LBP patch hits, you (and your other friends) will be more than ready to show off you mad creative skillz online.

*Update* So Sam_Protagonist’s post got slightly edited (with the quote shown above now strangely gone in the post). He’s listed a quick FAQ to clear up any confusing info, just to spell everything out for you…
- Is online create in the game from launch? No it’s not, however it will be included in the first game update after launch. We’re working on making this available as quickly as possible, but want to make sure it’s right before releasing it.
- What does online create actually mean? Online create, quite simply, is the ability to use the create side of the game in an online multiplayer fashion.
- So I can still share my levels? Absolutely. All of the sharing features of the game are up and running.
- And I can still play multiplayer? Yes, both online and offline multiplayer (or any combination of the two) for playing through the story, or any downloaded levels.
- And I can still create levels with my friends offline? Totally. Up to 4 players can work together on a single PS3 to create levels. Also, you can still work collaboratively with friends to build levels by exchanging them through the share portion of the game.
