Lose Your Marbles over DYOX

DYOX 001

If you suspect that you have claustrophobia but you’re just not sure, playing this homebrew is a good gauge for you to find out. The premise is that you’re a marble who has been held captive by enemy marbles and locked inside a room full of well placed contraptions and it’s up to you to find your way out if you ever want to see your marbles family ever again. Now, imagine 15 levels of of that. And need I say that it only gets more difficult as you progress?

ColdPie describes his Neoflash Summer Coding Contest entry as “a simple but fun puzzle game“; however, that is hardly the case. The only way that it is simple is that you only have to use your analog stick to control the marble and lead it to the direction you want it to go to or to click on the switches that you want to turn on. Other than that, you need some pumped-up IQ in order to bump the correct switches and flip the right tiles over, in order to reach the finish line.

It’s all a matter of trial error, really, so bring a lot of patience with you. It can be quite frustrating at times when you’ve almost (stress on almost) escaped and you slipped and fell off the tiles because you were too hasty to get to that switch, so we suggest that you take it slow when traversing the tiles. But don’t worry, as you make your way into the game, you will receive passwords that are combinations of different buttons (Up, Right, Down, Left, Circle, Cross, Triangle, Square, L, and R) that enables you to have access in any level of in the game of your choosing.

DYOX 002DYOX 003

Verdict: A Minus. Although he cites that the main menu is one of the game’s unfinished bit, an improvement is always welcome. Also, just to make the escape more thrilling, we suggest adding some sound effects and a theme in the game’s future release.

Kudos to ColdPie for a job well done.
