LOTR Online Seeks To Be At Par With WoW

By now, we all know how the Lord of the Rings (book and movie) revolved around the hobbit Frodo trying to do the impossible – which he later did. What you probably still don’t know is that the creators of the MMORPG version of the said trilogy is also aiming to complete a mission of Frodo-like proportions.

David Solari, Vice president and general manager of Codemasters Online Gaming, has declared open season for the online gaming market claiming that their company is projecting a future competition with the already well-established World of Warcraft. “World of Warcraft is such a benchmark now, but if something’s going to do it it’s going to be a Lord of the Rings brand that lets people play in that environment and experience that content. It’s got to have probably the best chance of competing with it.” said Solari.

Also according to him, Codemasters is expecting around one million subscribers on the west alone. If indeed those numbers will be met, then the LOTRO developers may, in the future, have a chance to snatch the top slot from WoW who has just recently logged over six million gamers. Set for release on the fourth quarter of this year, LOTRO will be initially based on The Fellowship Of The Ring, the first of the classic Tolkien series. Further expansions and developments will be then based on the succeeding  parts.

As a closure, Solari solidified his intention to challenge the success of WoW by promising that “Lord of the Rings is a pretty all encompassing MMO with a great brand behind it. So that’s a generally more competitive game”. They may already have Gandalf, but it won’t hurt for them to listen to the words of another quite famous wizard, Dumbledore: “It does not do well to dwell on dreams…”
