Mage Knight: Destiny’s Soldier for DS on its way

Mage Knight

Just like Dungeons and Dragons, another table-top hobby finally gets ported into less expensive and definitely more portable media. As another addition to the list of RPGs for Nintendo DS, Mage Knight: Destiny’s Soldieris now available in game stores everywhere for around $ 30.

Based directly on the popular miniatures wargame Mage Knight, which was created by WizKids and inspired by the very same collectible figures used in the game, Mage Knight: Destiny’s Soldier‘s rules and gameplay follow the established rules of its table-top counterpart. Minus the dice and the paint, of course. Mage Knight DS currently offers more than 80 maps to play in, as well as more than 90 different kinds of units to take under your command.

To those unfamiliar with the origins of the game, Mage Knight is a table-top, turn-based wargame that makes use of miniature figures that are strategically laid out upon a surface, which has been made to resemble specific terrain, whether it be a grassy valley or a rocky mountain pass. Players must then prove who is the better commander by deploying their pieces in the most effective times and places and making full use of their units’ abilities. The distance that a piece can move along the terrain is determined either by its set stats, or by dice rolls. Attacks, defense, range and damage dealt are also, more often than not, resolved in the same way.

Many Mage Knight enthusiasts spend long hours customizing their troops by hand-painting their pieces one by one.

Now, with the DS version of the game available, those of us who aren’t so good with a paint brush can now safely enjoy the game and hone our skills without having to worry about shoddy-looking troops.
