Market prediction: Japan to decommission 20GB, 60GB PS3s soon

PlayStation 3 - 60GB model - Image 1With Sony presenting the PlayStation 3’s 80GB version alongside a price cut for the 60GB unit here in North America, the company might be taking a similar route over in Japan.

This was prediction made by Enterbrain chief marketing analyst Mitsunobu Uwatoko, who further noted that Japan might be ditching the two lower-capacity units (20GB and 60GB) in the near future.

The $100 price cut with the 20GB upgrade in the US was not really surprising, as there have been rumours, given that the PS3 has been struggling. ItÂ’s like the time has come. In Japan too, PS3Â’s HDD will perhaps be much bigger. And nobody thinks that the 60GB or the 20GB will last much longer.

Uwatoko-san predicts that Sony will be selling either units in Japan for a reduced price, at least prior to pulling them out of service. Take note this is just a market prediction – we’ll update if Sony does plan to do this, or if they have something else in mind.
