Microsoft exec: Xbox 360’s lack of Blu-ray is an advantage over PS3

But if you ask Stephen McGill, Microsoft UK’s director of Xbox and Entertainment, the lack of a Blu-ray drive is actually an advantage.

“We have no plans to adopt Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360,” McGill said in response to the Blu-ray Xbox 360 rumors. “In fact, the future of home entertainment started last autumn when Xbox 360 became the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies.”

The statement is pretty much a reiteration of what Aaron Greenberg said about the rumors, insisting it’s that because the 360 doesn’t have a Blu-ray drive that the console is cheaper than the PS3.

Because it’s cheaper, it’s more accessible to gamers, and they make up for the lack of Blu-ray functionality with streaming 1080p movies. Both Microsoft execs, however, didn’t talk about how the lack of Blu-ray will affect their games in the long run.
