Microsoft on February NPD sales: there’s more to a winning console than sales

Xbox 360 Logo - Image 1We can expect quite a number of analysts and companies to start making a few statements regarding the February NPD U.S. results. Microsoft has decided to give its own take on the current situation of the different consoles following Sony‘s comments regarding the report.

A recent entry on the Gamerscore Blog regarding the February NPD update stated that a winning platform is not just defined by console sales but content and the community as well. Microsoft believes that the Xbox 360 has ample representation in all three categories.

With regards to the console sales, Microsoft pointed out that the Xbox 360 seems to be doing quite well overall. The post cited a few figures that were revealed in the recent NPD report to support their claims:

  • US$ 332 million was spent on the Xbox 360 platform this month, capturing 39 percent of the generationÂ’s ecosystem, US$ 235 million was spent on the Sony PlayStation 3 and US$ 283 million was spent on the Nintendo Wii. (February NPD data)
  • The Xbox 360 platform now has a U.S. installed base of 9.6 million; the PS3 has 3.8 million, the Wii has 8.1 million. (February NPD data)
  • February NPD data shows a new Xbox 360 software attach rate of 7.2, nearly twice that of the PS3 or the Wii. (February NPD data)
  • 255,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold during the month of February.  (February NPD data)

With respect to content, the post cited that the Xbox 360 is leading in games with six out of the top ten best selling console titles in February belonging to it. In addition, it was mentioned that the Xbox 360 sold US$ 184 million in games, while the PS3 sold US$ 97 million and the Wii US$ 130 million.

Microsoft also took the time to mention the gaming community behind the Xbox 360. According to the post, the company’s internal estimates show that “Xbox LIVE is the largest online gaming community currently over 10 million strong worldwide.” In comparison, the number of PS3 online network users are said to be pegged at around 2.9 million based on U.S. data only while the Wii has four million (including North America and Japan).
