Baseball fans will definitely get a kick out of the biggest updates from the developers of Sony Computer Entertainment America’s MLB 08: The Show (PS2, PS3, PSP). Today’s update focuses on the obligatory career mode found in just about every sports sim video game out there.

Dubbed Road To The Show 2.0, this is a major revamp from last year’s game mode as the developers worked hard to deliver a more in-depth career mode for players to enjoy. Eddie Cramm, Senior Designer of the game, described how they overhauled the Create Player system, the new Advancement System, and the manager messaging system.

On the PS3 version of MLB 08: The Show, he described how the players are now given total freedom when making a character using the new Create Player system. Asides from the modifiable geometry on nearly every part of the player’s face, you can also customize their batting and pitching stances.

As for the Advancement System, the developers have added a lot of different goals your player needs to satisfy in order to go up his career ladder. Last year saw merely basic goals such as hitting, base running, and ball fielding. This year concentrates on more unique goals like “Check your 3rd base coach for a sign” and being able to follow them to a tee.

Lastly, Cramm discussed how the new manager messaging system is now more detailed in the sense that the managers now give out more info than the standard “good game” comment after a match. In MLB 08, you can now check out the detailed stats given out by your manager on how your player is doing and what you can do to help improve your stats.

All in all, the RTSS 2.0 definitely looks like a more balanced and in-depth career mode compared to last year’s title. Everyone will get the chance to see these new changes once March 3 rolls in and MLB 08: The Show finally makes its way to retail stores in North America.
