More on the Geometry Wars-Grid Wars Battle

tug of warIt was only last week when QJ reported on the intellectual property battle between Geometry Wars and Grid Wars. Biting on the same bone as Geometry Wars‘, Grid Wars had been asked to cease its distribution online. And the tug of war isn’t finished yet.

According to Grid Wars author Mark Incitti, he did offer Bizzarre Creations to make necessary changes to the game, as well as offer full credit. Part of the truce will be changing the name of the game and including in-game disclaimers and links to the Geometry Wars developer. However, Bizarre Creations apparently ignored such offer. Instead, he later on received an email demanding for the halt in the distribution of the game.

While Incitti maintains that he fully understands where Bizarre Creations is coming from, he cannot help but criticize the fact that Geometry Wars in itself, or at least most of its gameplay elements, are derived from retro games. “I appreciate their position,” he told GI.biz. “I understand that they need to protect their ideas (or their particular amalgam of pre-existing ideas) – is anything new really?”

Incitti also doubts the claims that his game was direly affecting the sales of the Xbox 360 version of Geometry Wars. He further insists that while his game may have been the popular one among the “clones”, there definitely are more out there whose gameplay is much closer to Geometry Wars.

Prior to the demand from Bizarre Creations, Incitti has allegedly been discussing the matter with a Bizarre Creation representative since “early April”. As of yet, no legal action has been taken against him, although he had acceded to the demand of Bizarre Creations.
