More PS3 details

The backSince the folks at IGN have a PS3 debug kit, they had a small Q&A regarding the PS3. We thought that you guys wouldn’t really want to read about other people’s befuddlement regarding the much-awaited PS2 successor so we’ll just drop the Q’s and give you the A’s. Here be the details:

  • The system is quiet. However it heats up. You can definitely feel the system spew hot air from the vents on the side. The back of the system gets particularly hot. The sides just get mildly warm.
  • A Motorola Bluetooth headset didn’t work with the debug unit. However they only tired to connect it using version 1.0.
  • The retail unit has a PSP-like sleep mode.
  • The test unit has a “Custom Resolution” setting that allows you to tell the system what your TVs maximum resolution is. However, they’re not sure it up-scales lower resolutions (The PS3 can play old games remember?) to higher ones.
  • You need a memory card adapter to save PS2 games to the PS3’s hard drive.
  • The face buttons on the controller are analog. Not sure about the D-PAD though, but we already confirmed the buttons are analog. The face buttons have just a tiny bit more give, a little more squishy feeling to them so it’s easier for you to tell how hard you’re pressing.
  • The PS3’s set up to run stuff off external HDDs but the folder structure might be tough for it to find stuff.

Well, we hope these details help curb the wait for the retail launch. Enjoy!
