Thankfully, that is not the case, but according to Naughty Dog‘s Amy Hennig, Drake’s adventure almost turned out to be just another FPS clone because of what she explains as the gaming industry zeitgeist. Read on to find out more!

Amy Hennig - Image 1According to Amy Hennig, Game Director for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Naughty Dog‘s latest gaming project could have turned out into something like BioShock or even the controversial Resistance: Fall of Man.

Hennig said that they have gone through several ideas while they were still in the brainstorming process in Uncharted. Apparently, some of those brainstorming sessions involved with ideas of “aliens and war shooters”… Resistance much?

Hennig attributes this fact to the zeitgeist that is currently propagated by the gaming industry, an industry where most of the people are of the same age bracket and thus are sharing the same influence, generating similar ideas. “Because of that, we tend to like the same kind of things,” Hennig said.

She also mentioned the fact that Uncharted‘s protagonist, Nathan, shares the same name with the lead character of Insomniac Game’s Resistance: Fall of Man.

Naughty Dog is aware that Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune may fall prey to comparisons to other games such as Tomb Raider due to the similarity of the settings, but Hennig assures that the similarities are only skin-deep. “The gameplayÂ’s not even similarÂ… the hand-to-hand combat and gunplay is nothing like ‘Tomb Raider,Â’ so the comparison already falls apart there,” she said.
