Nintendo acquires eSOL’s FAT file system and USB host stack

Nintendo acquires services of eSOL - Image 1Embedded software provider eSOL Co. Ltd. is happy to announce that some of its leading middleware products have been selected by Nintendo Company Ltd. to be incorporated in the Wii console. The two products are PrFILE2 FAT file system and PrUSB/Host USB host stack.

You don’t care? Well, it’s probably because you don’t know just yet how this will affect your console in general. The FAT file system software will provide file management functions which read and write data of the SD memory card. The other one, PrUSB, functions to provide the console with USB host capabilities.

eSOL Embedded Products Division Exec. VP Nobuyuki Ueyama is quite ecstatic with the relationship.

I believe that our products were selected because Nintendo highly-valued our long, successful history with many digital consumer products and high-reliability and functionality based on that. We will continue to provide superior products and technical services to strongly support developers in embedded software development.

The company has been around actually for more than 30 years now. It provides, as a whole, total solution for consistent services from development to sales and support. If you are now interested about the two products, here are their technical specifications:

  • PrFILE2: supports FAT12/16/32 and VFAT; fast backward seek function for file pointer; a function to minimize the file system destruction at accidental power shutdown or media removal
  • PrUSB/Host: compliant to USB1.1 and 2.0; direct communication with USB devices is supported without using PC; optional Mass Storage class driver enables using USB flash memory, other mass storage device and digital camera as the external storage
