Nintendo DS/DS Lite Saves Japan

DSThe cute little handheld has proven that it’s petite size and a pink finish cannot stop it from lifting the entire business in Japan out of a slump. Garnering a total of 4 million out of the 6.2 million hardware units that was sold in the first half of 2006, it represented a whopping 63% share of the hardware market.

It’s not just with hardware that the DS dominates. Seven out of the top ten titles are DS games, which includes the currently seated number one, More Brain Training for Adults (Brain Age 2) that sold 2.5 million units. The remaining three slots were taken by PS2 games lead by Final Fantasy XII with a 2.3 million sales under its belt.

The DS’ resilience remains to be seen when in the second half of the year new consoles like the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 will be launched. But for now, the spotlight and the stage belongs to the Nintendo DS.
