Nintendo: No need for Startup Disc… maybe?

If your Wii still does this... time to call Nintendo. If you’ve gotten your Wii already and ripped off the top of the box, you might have been wondering where the Wii Startup Disc was, Kotaku notes. Well, Nintendo says that final retail Launch boxes don’t need the Startup Disc anymore – it’s been pre-loaded onto the Wii itself before leaving the factory. (There goes all the speculation from the last article, whether it was Wiimote calibration or the browser or a free VC game. Oh, well).

Those boxes which were stamped “Wii Startup Disc” were, in Nintendo’s words, “early production boxes” used “for display purposes only”. Which explains how Engadget’s Paul Miller got the picture at the right of the Wii demanding its Startup Disc – it was, after all, a display stand.

Alas, not all is well with the no-need-for-Startup-Disc, however. One Kotaku reader reports that his Wii still wanted its mommy – er, its Startup Disc. Except, of course, that there was no Startup Disc included in the box (unless it’s hiding somewhere in the bundled Wii Sports). Don’t be surprised if your Wii doesn’t have the Startup Disc – be surprised if it still wants one.
