NPD: Software sales for PSP lagging

The hand held

The latest figures for PSP unit sales were quite good, with around 953,200 sold for December, and 6.7 millions sold life-to-date. However, despite those solid hardware sales, Kris Graft of Next Generation notes that PSP software failed to show up in any of the NPD’s top ten lists.

Kris Graft’s report notes that this further underlines what some pundits say is this consoles biggest problems – the need for a top selling game.

The PSP’s top-selling game in 2006 was GTA: LCS, a game that was released way back in October 2005. LCS just sold 593,000 during 2006, this isn’t including the later PS2 version. Graft notes that the NPD 2006 top ten list does not feature any games that sold less than 1 million, and that rival DS has two games in both the top ten sales charts and the December charts.

So what does this mean? The hardware is doing relatively ok; the developers need to make better games for the handheld. Will Crisis Core bring in the numbers and attract other profit minded developers to create for the PSP? Time will tell.
