On Blu-ray This Week: June 16 to June 22, 2008

This week’s batch of new Blu-ray movies may be quite limited in quantity compared to the previous weeks, but don’t let that deter you from checking out the selection. This time around comedy flicks (Men in Black, Be Kind Rewind) dominate the Blu-ray player, as well as a couple of visceral wildlife documentaries recorded in IMAX. After recovering from last week’s Blu-ray movie release filled with adrenaline and intense historical drama, it’s now time to unwind with a few bits of comedy gold filled with alien hijinks and good old treasure hunting. If you’re so inclined, you can also view a couple of wildlife documentaries in rendered in vivid IMAX.

There’s only a handful of titles for this week, with only six movies rounding out the list of new Blu-ray flicks. They will be simultaneously become available from virtual and brick-and-mortar store shelves on June 17. Two of them, Fool’s Gold and Be Kind Rewind, are recently released titles – we just hope that Sony keeps up with the trend and add a new-ish movie or two from time to time.

  

 
It’s quite safe to say that many, if not all, movie enthusiasts know about Columbia Picture’s spacey sci-fi comedy Men in Black. Immortalized on the silver screen by the Will Smith and Tommy Lee Brown as Agents J and K, Men in Black portrays New York City in an interesting new light: a city inhabited by aliens who manage to integrate themselves into the otherwise normal day-to-day lives of humans.

Fools Gold by Warner Bros. is a romantic adventure comedy featuring Matthew McConaughey as Ben “Finn” Finnegan. In his pursuit of the mysterious 18th century treasure, the Queen’s Dowry, Finnegan drops everything he possessed, including his marriage to Tess (Kate Hudson). The movie is set in the lush tropics of the Florida Keys – expect a lot of sun, surf and abs.

Yet another romantic comedy that will be coming out on Blu-ray this week is So I Married an Axe Murderer, starring Mike Myers and Nancy Travis. Myers plays the role of Charlie Mckenzie, a shy man who attempts to get rid of his fear of commitment by marrying a butcher (Travis). The marriage does little to assuage his paranoia, however, since Charlie thinks that his sweet bride is actually an axe murderer.

If spoofs are more to your preference, you may want to check out the zany, unrepentant caricature of classic and iconic movies in Be Kind Rewind, starring Jack Black and Mos Def. After accidentally magnetizing (thus erasing all content) all the VHS tapes that are being put on rent in his friend’s VHS rental store, Jerry (Black) attempts to keep the rental store alive by remaking several movies starring him and his friend Mike (played by Mos Def).

You can expect to see some of your old favorites being parodied in Be Kind Rewind, such as Ghostbusters and Rush Hour 2.

After having your fill of comedy, you can stop laughing and relax your diaphragm by popping in a couple of wildlife predatory documentaries recorded in IMAX film format into your PS3 or your Blu-ray player. Wolves and Bears both track down the behavior of two of the most feared hunters in their natural habitats, including Yellowstone Park, Alaska, and the Arctic tundra
