Optional PS3 firmware 3.15 update now mandatory
A lot of readers sent in tips today about PS3 firmware update 3.15’s release. Now I found this weird since that update was released more than a month ago. According to the US PlayStation blog, however, Sony apparently has turned it from an optional update to a mandatory one.
A lot of readers sent in tips today about PS3 firmware update 3.15’s release. Now I found this weird since that update was released more than a month ago. According to the US PlayStation blog, however, Sony apparently has turned it from an optional update to a mandatory one.
An SCEE rep told gaming news blog Joystiq the reason for the change:
We have found out that users will not be able to acquire trophies on some game titles. Users can avoid this problem by updating the PS3 system to firmware 3.15 and therefore we’ve made it a mandatory update. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate for your understanding and continued support.
If you’ve already updated to 3.15, there’s no need to do so again. Only those still on lower firmwares need to download the update.
Update 3.15 includes a new data transfer feature and a minis emulator that lets PS3 owners play PSP minis games on their console. It also has the usual system stability improvements for some PlayStation 3 software. You can find out more about it here.
