Potential patch problems: blinking terrain

As you all probably know by now, today is Patch Day for World of Warcraft. It means that by the time the servers come back up from extended maintenance, you should all be looking at the beginnings of Black Temple attunement attempts in WoW. Well, before anything else, it seems, even the patch isn’t perfect, as some posters have managed to realize.

It seems that there’s a certain loss of detail on the public test realms as a result of patch 2.1.0 that may manifest itself when the patch goes live. Of the different commenters, it seems Brik of Ysera managed to describe the problem best:

Ever since copying to PTR i noticed that when I fly both on my mount and flightpath the terrain in the distance keeps blinking as it is trying to keep up with me. Whole large chunks of polygons change colors until they finally settle in whatever the color they are supposed to be.

The problem with details not showing up like they’re supposed to is a game distraction, but not a game breaker. Blizzard MVP Faizaniel of Dragonblight mentioned that turning off “Level of Detail” in the video options makes the problem go away, so there are workarounds to the problem.

An actual fix for this patch problem, however, is another story. As TigerClaw, one of the Blizzard Posters, writes,

Yes, we should have spotted this sooner. It will be addressed in one of the first post 2.1.0 patches. Making a new build of 2.1.0 and re-building the patches would have meant days of delay (re testing) and another week to get 2.1.0 on live. Since the impact is minor and the workaround is known, we chose to proceed with the release even though we know of this issue.

We guess the wait begins now, doesn’t it?
