Monster Hunter Freedom 2 was huge in Japan. With its looming September release in the U.S. and Europe, we managed to gather a few more details about the game from a 1UP interview with producer Ryozo Tsujimoto.

There are changes aplenty that differentiates Monster Hunter Freedom 2 from the second Monster Hunter title for the PS2. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 does include a lot of the content found in Monster Hunter 2 , but Tsujimoto emphasizes that it’s nothing like a port. “It does feature a lot of that content, but it’s a brand-new game, plus so much more.”

Just how much more, you ask? Here’s the lowdown from Tsujimoto:

The main difference between Dos for PS2 and Freedom 2 for PSP is of course that we’ve added new systems like the Farm, and the different things you can do in the village, in the town, as well as the Kitchen, as you’ve seen.

We’ve added a lot of content, and while we do have a lot of the same monsters, we’ve changed up the order in which you encounter the monsters, plus different animations and attacks. So when people see these monsters they may be familiar with, they’ll see new attacks and animations and hopefully be surprised. We made it a lot fresher by readjusting things.

Another thing we’ve adjusted in Freedom 2 is the way you level up your weapons and your armor. There are a lot more steps in-between, instead of having fewer, bigger steps of progression. So without having to wait so many missions in order to level your equipment up, now you can feel more progression.

The reason we changed this upgrade system is because it’s on PSP and you’re probably playing for shorter periods of time, rather than longer periods of time at home. So if you play in little steps you can do more things with what you get in that time.

This next bit of info will probably be disappointing to some PSP owners. Apparently, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 will be limited to ad how wireless play. According to Tsujimoto, “the ability to take [a PSP] out on the town, or to play with groups of friends while sitting down” was Capcom‘s primary factor for going with ad hoc.

“With Monster Hunter Freedom 2, we don’t have any infrastructure mode; we’ll just have ad hoc locally,” said Tsujimoto. “But in the future, it’s something we can think about if the fans want something like that and let us know.”
